In a joke post, Reddit user Boobel posted “Petition to have Shadowkeep purchasable with Baryon Bough,” the planetary material found in Destiny 2’s Dreaming City. Bungie community manager Cozmo saw and responded to the post making a deal: the first person to collect 100,000 Baryon Bough gets a free Collector’s Edition of Shadowkeep, which is worth $150 US.
To collect that many Baryon Bough in the Dreaming City is an outlandish grind. Another Reddit user, Atomic_Tank, ran the Aphelion’s Rest Lost Sector as fast as possible to collect Baryon Bough, wiped, respawned, and did it again to see how long it would take to rack up 100,000. This player figured out that to get this done before the release date of Shadowkeep, it would take about 8-12 hours per day of grinding this Lost Sector for the next month or so.
Not only that, because players can only stack a maximum of 999 Baryon Bough per inventory slot, it would require all 50 material slots in a player’s inventory as well as all 50 material slots in their Vault to hold that many Baryon Bough on one account. Fans pointed out that the game makes it technically impossible to actually hold 100,000, which Cozmo responded to, on Twitter, saying that if 99,900 is the true cap one player can hold then that is the new goal that someone must reach to win the Shadowkeep Collector’s Edition.
Anyone crazy enough to go for it simply needs to reply to Cozmo on the original Reddit thread with their Destiny 2 account name so that Cozmo can verify that they have collected that many of the material. The Collector’s Edition is currently sold out and no longer available, so this could be the only way anyone who wanted it, and did not act fast enough to secure one by pre-ordering, can get their hands on it.
Destiny 2: Shadowkeep releases September 17, 2019 for Google Stadia, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
